Forget the Divide: Why Your Next Hire Has a “Northern Soul”

AUTHOR: Ali Wallace

The North is now a global centre for creativity, innovation, and culture. The old narrative of a North-South divide, where top-tier careers could only be forged in the capital, is officially dead. We saw this firsthand recently at Mad//North where we were the Official Talent Partner once again.

For years, the gravitational pull of London was undeniable. However, accelerated by the widespread adoption of flexible working and a collective reassessment of what a fulfilling life and career looks like, the talent map of the UK has been redrawn.
At DNA Recruit, we’re no longer having to sell the North to candidates, they’re coming to us asking for it. They’re seeking the dynamic, ambitious opportunities on offer in cities like Manchester, Leeds, and Newcastle, combined with a quality of life and cost of living that London sometimes struggles to match.

What we witnessed at MAD//North was the why behind this shift.

Your Northern Identity is Your Greatest Asset

One of the most powerful sessions came from Havas London’s Chief Creative Officer, Vicki Maguire, a proud Northerner who urged the audience to embrace their authentic identity. She challenged the idea of parachuting into the region for inspiration, arguing that the North has always been a world-class creative force. Her advice to embrace that chip on your shoulder and put more vinegar on it was a rallying cry against cultural imitation.

This is a vital lesson for every business leader in the region. For too long, companies have felt the pressure to adopt a London-centric corporate persona to be taken seriously. What we’re seeing now is that the opposite is true. Your Northern Soul is your most potent tool for attracting talent.

Candidates are tired of generic employer brands. They are drawn to companies with a strong, authentic identity that they can connect with on a human level. By celebrating your Northern roots, you don’t just stand out in a crowded market; you attract people who are looking for a genuine culture to belong to, not just a logo to work for.

From Brain Drain to Brain Gain

This cultural confidence is turning the historic brain drain into a brain gain. The talent we place in Northern roles isn’t compromising on ambition; they are making a conscious choice for a better all-round quality of life without sacrificing career progression.

For hiring managers, this changes the conversation entirely. You are no longer just recruiting for a role; you are recruiting for a lifestyle. You are offering a chance to be part of a thriving creative ecosystem, to do career-defining work, and to have a life outside of it.

This has profound implications for retention. When people move to the North, they are often putting down roots. They are buying homes, building communities, and investing in the region’s future. When an employee is deeply integrated into their local community, their loyalty extends beyond the company to the city itself, creating a powerful retention anchor that a salary bump alone cannot dislodge.

The DNA Verdict: The Future is Northern

Our time at MAD//North confirmed what our data has been telling us for some time. The North is no longer an alternative to London, but a destination in its own right for the brightest talent in the creative, marketing, and tech industries.

For businesses, the message coming out of Mad//North was clear. Stop looking south for validation. Embrace your Northern Soul, celebrate your identity, and you will find that the talent you need is already looking for you.
